Presently, Dr. Matthew Pettway is a postdoctoral fellow at the School of Languages, Cultures and World Affairs at the College of Charleston where he is completing a single-authored book manuscript, tentatively entitled, Black Cuban Literature in the Age of Conspiracy Juan Francisco Manzano and Gabriel de la Concepción Valdés. Matthew Pettway argues that Catholicism, Romanticism and Neoclassicism were a symbolic language for African-inspired spirituality beneath the surface of the dominant aesthetic. This is the first book to examine Juan Francisco Manzano and Gabriel de la Concepción Valdés in critical juxtaposition, not only as divergent personalities but also as literary collaborators. Dr. Pettway’s manuscript is under contract with the University Press of Mississippi. This is the first project of its kind to unearth an African spiritual subtext in black Cuban colonial literature. Matthew Pettway is a native of Detroit, MI.
